Attackers kidnapped and murdered 14 men and left their corpses in a Mercedes Benz van on a major highway in the state of San Luis Potosi in central Mexico, a prosecutor said yesterday.
The men were kidnapped on Wednesday in the northern state of Coauhuila, where the vehicle was stolen in an armed robbery, said an official from the attorney general’s office. The corpses were found early yesterday morning. The attack bore the hallmarks of drug cartels, but it was not immediately clear which group carried out the murders, or who the victims were, said the official.
Yesterday, federal police raided an alleged drug cartel safe house in San Luis Potosi’s capital, leading to an hour-long shoot-out with gunmen. Mexico TV station Milenio showed amateur photos of students at a nearby university hiding under tables as the firefight raged. – (Reuters)
