Boy dies in family farm accident

A 15-year-old boy has died following an accident at his family's farm near Skibbereen in West Cork this evening.

A 15-year-old boy has died following an accident at his family's farm near Skibbereen in West Cork this evening.

The boy was fatally injured when he was trapped between an excavating machine and another piece of plant equipment at the farm near Church Cross at around 6.30pm.

He was rushed by ambulance to Cork University Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. A post-mortem is due to be carried out on his remains tomorrow.

The Health and Safety Authority have begun an investigation while gardaí have also begun an inquiry with a view to preparing a file for the coroner's court.
