London - Chancellor Gordon Brown yesterday rejected an opposition call for him to drop plans for a climate change levy, despite a warning that it could cost more jobs in car production.

After Vauxhall's announcement that car-making would end at Luton, with the loss of 2,000 jobs, the shadow chancellor, Mr Michael Portillo, urged Mr Brown to scrap this "job-destroying" tax.

Mr Brown told him: "We are proceeding with the climate change levy."
