Cairo - South Africa called yesterday for an end to UN sanctions against Libya as President Mandela arrived in Egypt for talks with President Mubarak. Mr Mandela has reacted sharply to US criticism of his planned visit to Libya tomorrow and Thursday.
"How can they have the arrogance to dictate to us where we should go or who our friends should be?" he was quoted as telling a gathering of business people and politicians in Johannesburg at the weekend. Meanwhile, Scotland's most senior law officer yesterday reaffirmed his commitment to bring the two Libyans accused of the Lockerbie bombing to trial in Scotland or the United States. The move comes three days after the American relatives of the Lockerbie bombing victims agreed to send the pair to a neutral country for trial. Lord Hardie QC spoke during the hearing at the International Court of Justice in The Hague to try to resolve a dispute between the three countries over where the two Libyans should be tried. - (Reuters, PA)
