The Coast Guard is continuing to monitor a 32,000-tonne vessel carrying bauxite that became entangled off the southwest coast early this morning.

The MV Mar Reinaran into difficulty after it became entangled on the Dooaha Buoy in the Shannon Estuary.

A distress call was put into some time before 6.45 a.m., and a helicopter and two tugs were dispatched to assist.

The Coast Guard said there is no pollution threat from the vessel, and that Shannon Estuary Ports has taken charge of the operation.
