Chad's prime minister has died in Paris this morning.

"The government announces with profound sadness the death of Prime Minister Pascal Yoadimnadji . . . in Paris where he had been evacuated following a cardio-vascular accident," the government said in a statement.

"The prime minister was a great statesman with a strong sense of responsibility to the service of his country. He was a great uniter of the Chadian people," it said.

Mr Yoadimnadji (56), a former agriculture minister, was named prime minister in February 2005 by President Idriss Deby, who seized power in a military coup in 1990.
