A man is to appear in court this morning charged in relation to the death of a homeless man in Dublin on Monday night.

Mr Martin Reilly (56), originally from Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, died in St James's Hospital from injuries received in an incident at Island Street shortly before midnight on Monday.

Mr Reilly, for whom gardaí had an address at Lynch's Lane in Clondalkin, had been sleeping rough for a number of years, having also availed of homeless services in other parts of the city.

He had joined a number of other homeless people on Monday night who were congregating near an office and former accommodation shelter run by the Simon Community.

Mr Reilly received a number of blows to the head and body. He was removed from the scene and died a short time later in hospital. A post-mortem examination on the body subsequently took place.

Two people, a 25-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, were arrested by gardaí at 6 a.m. yesterday. They were questioned at Kevin Street Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The man was later charged under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act in relation to Mr Reilly's death and is due to appear before Kilmainham District Court today.

The woman was released without charge, and a file is being prepared on her for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí continued to appeal for witnesses last night, asking anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident to contact them on (01) 666 9400.

The area where the incident took place is often frequented by homeless people at night.

Island Street is home to a Simon outreach centre, from which the charity operates soup runs.

An emergency accommodation shelter at nearby Usher's Island was moved by Simon to Harcourt Street more than a year ago to allow for renovations to the quayside building.
