A chef from France has been sentenced to 18 months in prison by Judge John Garavan at Galway District Court for attempting to defraud Allied Irish Banks of more than £8,000.
Frederick Inglebert (27), a former soldier, had been living and working as a chef in Clifden. He opened a deposit and current account in the local AIB branch and kept between £20 and £30 in each account.
Det Garda Damian Fahy said that on April 30th, Inglebert wrote three cheques totalling £8,406 using his current account cheque book and lodged the money in his deposit account in Clifden. In Oughterard, he carried out three fraudulent transactions at the local AIB branch, knowing there was no money in his current account to meet the sum involved.
Judge Garavan said Inglebert had acted with criminal intent and daring and he refused to suspend the sentence.
