A proposed residential home for children in full-time care has been approved by An Bord Pleanala, despite opposition from residents in southeast Clare, writes Gordon Deegan.

Residents of Knockadreheid, at O'Brien's Bridge, had said the home, which will accommodate five children, was not in keeping with the farming and family nature of the residents in the immediate area and that its location on a tourist route was flawed.

They had also said the location was inadequate for the facilities needed to cater for the special needs of the children.

However, in its ruling, the board found that the proposal would not seriously injure amenities and would be in accordance with the proper planning and development of the area.
