London - The Chilean government yesterday asked to be allowed to have a say in a new hearing by Britain's House of Lords on the fate of the former dictator Augusto Pinochet.
Officials at the House of Lords said lawyers acting on behalf of the Chilean government had lodged a petition asking for permission to make its case before the Law Lords later this month.
The US Attorney General, Ms Janet Reno, said yesterday her office was looking into allegations that Gen Pinochet was behind the Washington murder of Chile's former foreign minister, Orlando Letelier, in 1976. Asked if Gen Pinochet could ever be tried in the United States, Ms Reno answered: "That's what we have under review."
