A 37-year-old Chinese man was yesterday remanded in custody after he was charged in connection with an incident in which another Chinese man was stabbed in the neck during a row in a Cork city centre restaurant.
Mr Weng Quizhi, of no fixed abode, appeared at Cork District Court on two charges arising from the row between four Chinese nationals at Cafe Kylemore at Merchants Quay around lunch time on Thursday.
Mr Quizhi was charged with possession of an offensive weapon, namely a blade, and with engaging in threatening, insulting or abusive behaviour at Cafe Kylemore in Cork on December 9th.
Yesterday Garda Charlie O'Mahony gave evidence of arresting, charging and cautioning Mr Quizhi at the Bridewell Garda station on December 9th. Mr Quizhi replied: "I will explain to the judge tomorrow."
Insp Charlie Barry applied for a remand in custody, saying gardaí had not been able to establish any fixed address for Mr Quizhi. Judge Uinsinn Mac Gruairc remanded the accused in custody to appear again at Cork District Court next Wednesday.
Meanwhile gardaí confirmed they were looking for a second Chinese man after he escaped from Garda custody following his arrest for questioning about the same incident.
Gardaí have circulated a description of the man to stations around the country.
