A former hospital consultant who was cleared of indecent assault charges is to face a Medical Council fitness to practise committee.

At Dundalk Circuit Criminal Court yesterday, an application was made on behalf of retired surgeon Michael Shine (74) for a transcript of his trial, which lasted three weeks in October 2003.

At the time of the trial, Mr Shine had an address on Wellington Road, Dublin.

He had been accused of 10 charges of indecently assaulting five young patients either in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda, or at his consulting rooms on Fair Street in Drogheda.

His barrister yesterday asked Judge Pat McCartan for an order to take up a copy of the transcript, adding that a hearing was due before the fitness to practise committee of the Medical Council next month.

The judge granted the application and directed a copy be prepared and furnished "to whichever party who so wishes it". However, the court was then told it would take some time to prepare the transcript, and it was unlikely to be ready next month.

Mr Shine retired from the hospital in 1995.
