An Oireachtas Committee will meet in private this morning to consider when to publish the Garda report into the shooting dead of John Carthy at Abbeylara last April. The report was given to the chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Mr Sean Ardagh, yesterday and distributed to committee members last night.
Several committee members said last night there were legal issues involved in the decision, and they wished to ensure copies were given to the Carthy family and gardai mentioned in the report before it was published. The committee must also decide whether hearings will be held.
Mr Carthy was killed when members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit shot him four times after a standoff with gardai at his home in April. During the standoff Mr Carthy discharged 30 shots from a shotgun.
The recent inquest verdict stated that Mr Carthy died after being shot at Toneymore, Abbeylara, on April 20th. The four shots discharged by two members of the Garda Emergency Response Unit hit him from behind.
