GERMANY:German composer Hans Werner Henze, who died aged 86 in Dresden on Saturday, created an outstanding body of musical works with theatrical and literary dimensions in the opera house, the concert hall and beyond.

German-born, but long resident in Italy, he was continental Europe’s leading composer of operas in the period following the second World War.

He also composed a dozen ballets, while his output for the concert hall extended to more than 200 separate works, including 10 symphonies, numerous concertos and other chamber, instrumental and vocal pieces.
