Concern has allocated £3 million to increase food aid to southern Sudan, the agency announced yesterday. Concern's director for emergencies, Mr Paddy Maguinness, said those facing death from starvation in the region now numbered 1.5 million, more than doubling in less than six weeks.
The scale of the crisis now outstripped the capacity of the official UN humanitarian organisation to deal with it, he said. If stronger action was not taken, tens of thousands of people would die within the next two to three months, he added.
