Children attending a gaelscoil in north Dublin are being subjected to "intolerable" and "traumatic" teaching conditions, an independent report has found.
The report, by safety consultants QTS Ltd, found Gaelscoil Cholmcille in Santry to be "in serious breach of its minimum legal obligations". The school's location, above a gymnasium in St Kevin's football club, was said to be unsafe and insecure. The report also warned pupils were being caused "trauma" by the presence of adults in the building "going to and from showers in various states of undress".
The report, commissioned by the Irish National Teachers Organisation, was presented to the Minister for Education yesterday by parents and children from the school. They hope to move to a new building at a site owned by Dublin City Council on Oscar Traynor Road.
The Minister said no decision would be made on the new site until a "broader examination" of primary education needs in the area was completed. Among the defects identified by QTS were the absence of drinking water, overcrowded classrooms and inadequate toilet facilities.
