Bomb experts carried out a controlled explosion on a suspect package which was discovered this morning at the Millennium Stadium before Wales' RBS 6 Nations match against Ireland in Cardiff.

Stadium manager Bob Evans confirmed in a statement: "A package was found in the stadium for which an owner could not be identified.

"As a precautionary measure in the current climate, a controlled explosion was conducted.

"The package was discovered by staff conducting the normal security sweep of the stadium before opening the gates. Experts were already on site to carry out the controlled explosion."

The incident did not disrupt arrangements for the match, and the gates were opened to the public at 12 noon as planned. The game is scheduled to kick off at 2pm.
