The €2 billion redevelopment of the Cork docklands is to receive national backing after Taoiseach Bertie Ahern announced a new national steering forum to help convert the area into a new centre for Cork city.
Mr Ahern told a Fianna Fáil function in Cork last night attended by more than 500 people that the major development of the docklands area was one of the most significant projects to drive Cork's economic development.
"I know that significant work has already been carried out by Cork City Council and the various interested parties in advancing this flagship project. This under-utilised section of Cork has enormous potential."
Mr Ahern said the docklands could become a "new thriving heart" for Cork city in business, tourism, leisure and housing.
The Cork Docklands National Steering Forum will comprise Government departments and private sector interests. It will support Cork City Council which is spearheading the development of the docklands which extends both sides of the river Lee from the Port of Cork building to Tivoli on the northern side and Blackrock on the southern side.
Cork City Council was given the go-ahead last month by An Bord Pleanála to proceed with a compulsory purchase order of the long-term lease of Cork Showgrounds. The properties include 8.7 hectares owned by the Munster Agriculture Society at Cork Showgrounds in Ballintemple.
