The civic ceremony at which Mr John Hume will be awarded the freedom of the city of Cork has been arranged for May 8th.

The award is in recognition of the former SDLP leader's life-long service to politics in his native Derry, at Stormont, the House of Commons and the European Parliament, and to mark his retirement from public life.

The ceremony will take place in Cork City Hall and he will receive symbolic keys to the city.

"We are delighted to award the freedom of the city to John Hume in recognition for his tireless efforts to bring peace to Northern Ireland down through the years," a spokesman for the Lord Mayor, Cllr Colm Burke, said.

"I certainly look forward to my visit next month," Mr Hume said.
