Coroner's jury want age guide for bikes

The jury at an inquest in Dublin urged that an age recommendation be put on bicycles used by children

The jury at an inquest in Dublin urged that an age recommendation be put on bicycles used by children. A Garda technical expert said the five-year-old girl killed by a double-decker bus probably could not reach the brake levers with her fingers.

Dublin Bus driver Raymond White told the court that he did not see little Amy Feery until it was too late.

Garda John Flood, who examined the bus and the bike, said the bike had no lights fitted front or rear, but it had reflectors.

He said the bike was not suitable for a young child under the age of 10 due to the brake alignment.

The jury, which passed a verdict of accidental death, recommended that the coroner contact the bicycle manufacturer and distributors to alert them and possibly place an age recommendation on the bicycle.
