A former Cork County Council employee has been remanded on bail for sentence after he pleaded guilty yesterday to stealing over €100,000 over a 14-month period from the council office where he worked.
Seán Deasy, (63) of Greenanes, Ardfield, Clonakilty, Co Cork, pleaded guilty when he was arraigned on six counts of theft of cash and cheques of sums totalling €117,000 from Cork County Council offices at Kent Street, Clonakilty between August 2004 and October 2005.
Defence barrister Séamus Roche BL told Cork Circuit Criminal Court that Deasy suffered from "a significant gambling addiction" and that he was currently receiving treatment for the problem and he would benefit from a number of background reports. Deasy had managed to repay the greater part of the money. Judge Patrick Moran remanded Deasy on continuing bail to appear again on November 16th for sentence.
