AN ELDERLY couple were killed in a head-on crash on the main N21 in west Limerick at lunchtime yesterday.

The man and woman, who were in their 70s, were travelling in an outbound direction from Limerick when their vehicle, a silver Citroen, was involved in a collision with a black Lexus travelling in the opposite direction.

The crash took place at 1.30pm near a filling station at Coolanoran between Newcastle West and Rathkeale on the main Limerick to Kerry road.

Two women travelling in the Lexus were hospitalised following the crash but their injuries were not life-threatening.

It is understood one of the women may have suffered a broken leg. Both were being assessed at the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Limerick.

The elderly couple are from the west Limerick area.

Gardaí said their names would not be released until all family had been informed.

The road remained closed for most of yesterday afternoon while the scene was preserved for technical examinations.

Diversions on the busy N21 were in place via Ballingarry and Ardagh before the road reopened later yesterday evening.
