Washington - The US Supreme Court yesterday ordered a delay of the scheduled execution of a mentally handicapped man in Texas.

John Paul Penry (44), was scheduled to die at 6 p.m. local time (12 p.m. Irish time) at the state prison in Huntsville, Texas. He would have been the third person executed in Texas in a week since Mexican national Miguel Flores died on November 9th. Penry was condemned to death for the 1979 rape and murder of Pamela Mosely Carpenter (22), three months after he had been released from prison on a separate rape conviction.
