Hammamet - The former Italian prime minister, Mr Bettino Craxi, was buried in exile yesterday as supporters cheered his memory and hurled insults at the government that refused to let him go home to die.

The former Socialist leader, who became a symbol of the "Tangentopoli" scandals, was buried in a tiny Christian cemetery beside the sea in the resort of Hammamet 60 km south of Tunis - his home since 1994.
