Cannabis worth an estimated €840,000 has been seized at a post sorting centre in Co Laois.

Some 42kg of the drug was discovered at An Post's Portlaoise Mail Centre on Monday, Revenue said in a statement.

It said the haul was found when a sniffer dog named Stella gave a positive reaction to a parcel sent from West Africa to an address in north Dublin.

The manifest on the parcel described the contents as “food and spices”, Revenue said.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Earlier this month, Revenue seized 15kg of cannabis worth an estimated €300,000 at the same location.

On that occassion the haul was also marked as “food and spices” and had been sent from West Africa to an address in North Dublin.
