Hundreds of people last night turned out in driving wind and rain for the removal of a Co Donegal couple, Jimmy and Kathleen Cuddihy, who were found dead in their home in Carndonagh on Thursday.
Among the members of the public to attend at the Chapel of Eternal Rest, Mountain Top, Letterkenny, were staff from Carndonagh Community School where Mr Cuddihy (77) was a maths teacher, as well as medical personnel who worked with Ms Cuddihy (73), a former nurse. Fr Eamonn McLaughlin conducted the removal ceremony. The couple will be buried tomorrow morning.
Their son Julian Cuddihy (42) appeared at a special sitting of Ballyshannon District Court on Friday night charged with their murders. Judge Kevin Kilrane ordered that he be psychiatrically assessed. Mr Cuddihy will again appear at a special sitting of Letterkenny District Court on Wednesday.
The Cuddihy family issued a statement yesterday in which they thanked Garda, medical and other personnel, neighbours, friends and the local community “for their support and sensitivity at this most difficult time”. The statement added that the family would not be releasing any other statement.
