Gardai in north Cork have arrested a man in his 20s following an assault on a woman and stand-off situation which lasted over four hours.

The incident began to unfold abound 2am when the woman (20s) managed to escape from a house at Sandfield Tce in Mallow and contacted gardaí.

The woman, who had been badly assaulted, was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she is being treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Gardaí went to the house and spoke to the lone occupant, a man in his 20s, but he refused to come out.

A stand-off lasting several hours ensued.

Members of the armed Regional Support Unit arrived on the scene but gardaí managed to keep a line of communication open to the man who had barricaded himself into the house.

The man gave himself up abound 6.30am and he was arrested under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

He was taken to Mallow Garda Station for questioning.
