A man in his 20s is fighting for his life after sustaining a stab wound to the head in Limerick.

Two men - aged 22 and 23 - were injured in a disturbance just after 3am on Monday off Woodbine Avenue in Caherdavin.

On arriving at the scene paramedics treated both men in situ before they were taken by ambulance to hospital.

Gardaí in Mayorstone station are investigating and sealed off two crime scenes for examination - one was a green area off Woodbine Avenue and the other was at nearby Walnut Drive.

Both men were badly injured and hospitalised, but there are grave concerns for the man who sustained a single stab wound to the head. His condition is being monitored at Limerick University Hospital.

The other man, who also suffered a stab wound, was said to be in a stable condition on Tuesday night.

The motive for the attack remains unclear but gardaí believe the two men are known to each other. No arrests have yet been made as part of the inquiry.

However, gardaí are hopeful they will soon be able to interview the man whose injuries were not life threatening.

A number of other witnesses have also been spoken to and the Garda inquiry is ongoing. The incident happened on a busy night in Limerick following the county’s victory in the All-Ireland senior hurling final at Croke Park.
