Man held over serious assault on woman in Carlow

Woman, who is a local in her early 50s, found unconscious on grounds of Pollerton Castle

A man has been arrested in Carlow in connection with a serious assault on a woman earlier this week.

Gardaí detained the man in his 30s following the attack in the early hours of last Sunday morning.

He is currently being held under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Carlow Garda station, a Garda spokesman said.

The woman, who is local and in her early 50s, was found injured and unconscious on the grounds of Pollerton Castle in Carlow town on Sunday afternoon.

Gardaí believe she was “accosted by somebody” between 3am and 5am and assaulted at that location, Supt Gerry Redmond said following the attack.

The woman was taken to St Luke’s Hospital in Kilkenny.

Gardaí have renewed their appeal for witnesses. Anyone who travelled along Staplestown Road, St Patrick’s Avenue or Pollerton Road between 2am and 5am on Sunday should contact Carlow Garda station.
