Staff at one of Dublin’s top hotels were threatened with knives by three men in balaclavas during a robbery in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Three men wearing balaclavas entered the five-star Conrad Hotel on Earlsfort Terrace in Dublin 2 at about 1am on Wednesday. Two of the raiders were armed with knives and threatened staff to hand over cash.

The three men fled the scene with a small sum of money. No staff or guests at the hotel were injured during the robbery and gardaí at Pearse Street are investigating the incident.

Martin Mangan, general manager of the Conrad, said staff were traumatised by the event, adding that it was not something the hotel had dealt with before. However, he confirmed that staff were trained for such events and that “safety and security procedures were in place”.

“We train for this all the time and we do have procedures in place. Our team followed those procedures.

“It was a very isolated incident. The hotel is located in a very safe part of the city.”

Mr Mangan failed to confirm whether two hotel employees were locked in a baggage room during the raid.

“Our immediate concern is for the welfare of our team members and we will offer them counselling. We’re still in shock.”

Mr Mangan confirmed that the raiders fled the scene with a “small sum of money” but could not confirm the exact amount.
