Police in Northern Ireland investigating the attempted murder of one of its officers in Belfast have made a fresh appeal for information.

On Sunday evening detectives revisited the filling station on the Crumlin Road where the policeman was shot twice in the arm after 10 bullets were sprayed at him and a colleague.

A car identical to the dark red Audi A4 Estate, registration number KNZ 2862, which detectives believe was used to leave the scene following the shooting last week was parked in Flax Street during the hour-long revisit in an attempt to prompt recollections of local people who may have seen it.

Det Supt Kevin Geddes said he was “keen to trace the movements” of the car in west and north Belfast during January.

“We know it was parked in Flax Street at 7.02pm last Sunday night, and it left the street just after 7.30pm and was driven through the Oldpark area before being burnt out around 8pm in Culmore Gardens in West Belfast.”

The senior officer is also seeking information about the weapon used in the attack, suspected of being an AK-type assault rifle.

He said the shooting by “a small misguided group” was a “cowardly act”, and appealed for anyone with information to contact his officers on 101 or anonymously via the Crime Stoppers line on 0800 555 111.

The so-called New IRA has claimed responsibility for the shooting. Three men aged 30, 36,and 39 who were arrested in connection with the incident last week have all been released without charge.
