The Northern Ireland Prison Service has confirmed the death in custody of a prisoner at Maghaberry Prison.

A statement on Saturday from the justice department said the 24-year-old man’s next of kin had been informed about his death in hospital on Friday night.

The PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman have launched investigations into the death, as per standard procedure.

The head of the prison service Ronnie Armour said: “I would like to extend my sympathy to the family of the prisoner. My thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”
