A civil servant has appeared in court charged with accessing information on computers at the Department of Social Protection and passing information to a third party.

Rory Lenihan, of 2A Ballaghaderg, Letterkenny, Co Donegal appeared at Letterkenny District Court.

He is charged with a total of 64 offences.

The offences are alleged to have taken place at the offices of the Department of Social Protection at Oliver Plunkett Road in Letterkenny between January 2008 and October 2008.

Detective Garda Peter Cullen told the court Mr Lenihan had made no reply when each of the 64 charges was put to him.

The investigating detective said the Director of Public Prosecutions had asked for the case to be adjourned until the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court in July.

Judge Kelly remanded Mr Lenihan on bail until July 28th next.

He ordered the accused to surrender his passport and sign on at Letterkenny Garda station once a week.
