A viable explosive device triggered a security alert in south Dublin last night.

The improvised bomb was found outside a house in the Glenshane area of Jobstown in Tallaght by a member of the public.

The Defence Forces deployed the explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team in response to a request from gardaí.

A cordon and road closures were put in place for public safety and a number of nearby houses were evacuated.

A Defence Forces spokeswoman said: “The device was made safe at the scene without the need for a controlled explosion and was brought to a secure military location for further examination.

“All component parts and items of an evidential nature will be handed over to the gardaí to assist them with their investigation into the incident.”

The scene was declared safe at 7pm.
