Thousands of houses in south Co Dublin were cut off last night when a freak accident caused a break in electricity supply to Ballybrack, Killiney and Shankill.

An ESB spokesman said it was originally thought that the break had been caused by vandalism, but they later discovered that a flock of crows had struck overhead wires at Shankill.
