Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman have "regretfully decided to separate" after just over 10 years of marriage, the couple's publicist said today.
"Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers, which constantly keep them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seemed best for both of them at this time," publicist Pat Kingsley said in a statement.
The two "stressed their great respect for each other, both personally and professionally," according to the statement.
The couple have two adopted children, Isabella and Connor.
They met on the set of the 1990 movie Days of Thunderand later appeared together in the 1992 film Far and Awaypart of which was filmed in Ireland and Stanley Kubrick's last film Eyes Wide Shut.
In December 1998, Ms Kidman told Newsweek Magazine, "I can't say what our journey is going to be. But it will be a hell of a journey."
"And I see myself as an old woman and he's an old man and we're married. I do see that."
Tom Cruise was previously married to actress Mimi Rogers.
