Dana ready for public debate with presidential candidates

Dana has said she will enter into public debate with any of the candidates in the presidential campaign

Dana has said she will enter into public debate with any of the candidates in the presidential campaign. The 44-year-old Derry-born singer also hopes there will be an election to choose the next President of Ireland.

In addition, she suggests that the Constitution could be changed to "give direct power to the people to vote" in such an election.

"I challenge any of the other prospective candidates to debate my vision of Ireland, compared to theirs and I would be happy to debate with them on RTE in September," she told The Irish Times yesterday.

"I think this would be hugely important so that before the nominations are closed the people have a chance to see what the vision of Ireland is that is being presented by respective candidates.

"That would give the opportunity to TDs to see exactly who and what they are voting for when they put someone's name as their presidential candidate."

To be nominated, Dana needs the backing of at least 20 members of the Oireachtas or four county councils, according to Article 12 of the Constitution.

This effectively puts a "stranglehold" on who can go forward for the job and takes the "power from the people", she believes.

"It also says in the Constitution that the people should have a direct choice in relation to who their President should be," she said.

"So how do you deal with that in the current political framework? Change the Constitution? Take the power from the political parties when it comes to the question of who should be nominated and give that power to the people? Perhaps we should."

"If Mary Robinson did anything as President", Dana believes, it was to show that "the position of President of Ireland should not just be a reward for faithful service to a political party".

Claiming that she "can be a President who isn't locked into that old tradition", the TV talk-show host believes she stands "a good chance of winning support" in her attempt to become a presidential candidate if "people are given the chance to vote" in an election.
