The Irish Prison Service is conducting an investigation into the circumstances in which a prisoner died at Cloverhill Prison on Thursday from an apparent suicide.
The prisoner, who was in his 20s and was from Tallaght, was found hanging in his cell at about 2.45pm. He was attended to at the scene before being brought by ambulance to Tallaght hospital, where he died a short time later.
He was a remand prisoner who had appeared in Cloverhill court on Thursday when he was remanded in custody. He was awaiting trial on minor drugs offences. He was known to gardaí and had served a number of short prison sentences.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Dublin say they are no longer treating as suspicious the death of a man whose body found in a house destroyed by fire in the city on Thursday. Foul play is not suspected.
The victim is believed to have been a homeless man who was squatting in a derelict house on Richmond Road. Dublin fire brigade was alerted to the fire at the property at about 5am on Thursday.
