The Minister for Defence, Mr Smith, said yesterday that he would retire from politics if Fianna Fail insisted on running three candidates in Tipperary North in the next general election.

Mr Smith, who failed to get selected at the convention in Thurles last Saturday, told The Irish Times that he would regard running three candidates as "political suicide".
