Two scuba divers have been rescued after spending a night floating in the sea over Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

Superintendent Shane Chelepy said an air search for the 40-year-old American woman and 38-year-old British man began off the tropical east coast after they failed to resurface near their chartered dive boat at the scheduled time yesterday afternoon.

A police statement said a plane crew spotted them floating this morning several miles from where they had been diving near the Whitsunday Islands and they were winched aboard a helicopter.

They were flown to a hospital in the Queensland city of Townsville for observation.
