Dr Connell to lead `seeds of hope' service

The Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Connell, will lead a New Year's Eve sunset service in the Pro-Cathedral tomorrow at 3.30 p.m. On the theme of "Seeds of Hope 2001", it will be a celebration in words and music.

At St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Evensong with Christmas music from Handel's Messiah begins at 3.15 p.m. tomorrow.

In Armagh Catholic diocese simultaneous ceremonies to mark the close of the jubilee year will take place in each parish tomorrow. Similar celebrations take place at the Cathedral of the Assumption, Thurles, at 3.30 p.m., the Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven, Galway, at 4 p.m., in St Mary's Cathedral, Killarney, at 7 p.m., and at St Muredach's Cathedral, Killala, at 4 p.m.

A closing jubilee year ceremony takes place at St Conleth's parish church in Newbridge, Co Kildare, at 4 p.m.

In Dublin on Monday there will be a Mass for World Day of Prayer for Peace 2001 in the Church of the Assumption, Booterstown. It will be celebrated by Archbishop Connell with a homily from Father Donal O'Mahony.

Also on New Year's Day a Mass for peace will be offered in Galway Cathedral at 11 a.m.

On January 6th, to mark the formal end of the jubilee year, there will be a concert celebrating 2,000 years of Christian music in the Pro-Cathedral. Taking part will be the Palestrina Choir, the Choir of Christ Church Cathedral, the Cana Music group and Cantando. Guest soloists will be Noirin Ni Riain and Sylvia O'Brien, with Gerard Gillen at the organ. It begins at 8 p.m.

A plaque will also be unveiled at the cathedral that day featuring a complete list of past archbishops of Dublin.
