Tommy Lyons has been appointed manager of the Dublin football team after delegates approved his nomination at a meeting of the County Board at Parnell Park tonight.

Lyons succeeds Tom Carr and will serve a three year term. Carr’s term of office was ended by the County Board in controversial circumstances last month.

The Mayo native had been favourite for the position after Dublin legend Brian Mullins and 1995 All-Ireland winning manager Dr. Pat O’Neill withdrew from the race last month due to work commitments.

Paul Caffery, Alan Larkin and former Cavan manager Val Andrews were the remaining three candidates in the running for the job.

As expected, Caffery - a successful club manager with Na Fianna - will join Lyons as a selector.

Lyons guided Offaly to a Leinster title in 1997 and to national league glory a year later. He achieved his first notable success in management when guiding Dublin club Kilmacud Crokes to the All-Ireland title in 1995.
