A man who was extradited from the Netherlands at the weekend has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of a Co Clare farmer two years ago.

Arie Abraham Van Veen (29), Bootersloot in the Netherlands, is charged with dangerous driving causing the death of Thomas Boland on November 9th, 2004, at Ballysimon on the Southern Ring Road in Limerick.

Mr Van Veen was extradited last Friday morning after gardaí travelled to Amsterdam to execute a European arrest warrant which was issued last year.

Eight hours later he appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court where he was remanded in custody until yesterday. During the court hearing Judge Tom O'Donnell was told that the Dutch national had signed a plea of guilty in relation to the offence.

The court also heard that the DPP had recommended that the matter be sent forward for trial to the current sitting of Limerick Circuit Criminal Court.

Judge O'Donnell remanded Mr Van Veen in custody with consent to bail on his own bond of €500 and an independent surety of €5,000.

He is also is due to appear before Limerick Circuit Court, today.

Mr Boland (35), who was from Broadford, Co Clare, died two days after the tractor he was driving was in collision with a blue Volvo truck.

Mr Boland was married with two children.
