Movement to break down barriers

Ezimotion is a new dance experience for teenagers, designed to develop their creativity and confidence through movement.

Ezimotion is a new dance experience for teenagers, designed to develop their creativity and confidence through movement.

Sponsored by the ESB and CoisCeim Dance Theatre, Ezimotion will be presented at a series of weekend workshops in centres across the State. The workshops are free and are open to boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 18.

Unlike conventional dance classes, the programme doesn't teach dance steps, but allows people to express themselves freely, as CoisCeim's development manager Jak Ahluwalia explains.

"We're not trying to train people to be dancers. It's more about getting people to use their bodies and experiment with movement in ways they may not have done since they were small children."

During four-hour sessions on a Saturday and Sunday, the participants will be given a series of tasks to express through movement. Sessions can be very vigorous and strenuous, but Ahluwalia says participants don't need to have a particular level of fitness. "People will only be asked to do what they are comfortable with. No one will be shut out or singled out and made to feel awkward."

Ezimotion sessions will be held in Galway, Letterkenny, Listowel, Sligo and Waterford over the coming months. For information about the classes contact Jak Ahluwalia on (01) 670 4906.
