To mark International Day Against Racism on March 21st, the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) and the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland (ECNI) in association with Poetry Ireland will hold a schools' poetry competition on the theme of anti-racism and/or interculturalism to celebrate the different cultures and ethnic groups in Ireland today.

The competition is open to the pupils of all secondary schools in Ireland, North and South, and aims to raise awareness of the need to combat racism in all its manifestations. This year sees the introduction of a guest language. Pupils can now submit poems in Irish, English or Arabic. Deadline for receipt of entries is Friday, January 27th.

Applied Maths Course for Teachers

The Irish Maths Teachers Association (Cork branch) is running a course for new and existing teachers of Leaving Certificate applied maths. The course would also suit HDE students in maths. GMIT Letterfrack Open Day

The Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology open day takes place on Friday, January 20th. The institute offers three entry-level programmes at the Letterfrack campus. The programmes on offer are: BSc in furniture design and manufacture, BSc in furniture production and technology and the BSc (Hons) in design and technology education (new programme).

This second open day starts at 11am and is for students, parents and teachers. Detailed information on all programmes and entry requirements will be available as will guided tours of the workshops and lab facilities.
