Eight fishermen have been rescued after they sent out SOS signals when their British boat started sinking off the northwest coast of Spain.

Three of the crew were taken to hospital in Burela, Spain, suffering from hypothermia.

The remaining five were picked up by a Spanish marine rescue vessel and taken onshore.

Initial reports said the eight were British but a marine rescue service spokesman said this was probably because the boat was flying a British flag.

He said the crew comprised of two Brazilians, two Spaniards, two Venezuelans, a Moldavian and a Ukrainian.

The boat, ' Dean' was en route to southeast England from Venezuela when the ship sprung a leak some 40 miles off the coast.

The crew jumped into three lifeboats and minutes later the Dean went under, said the spokesman.
