Cricket: Alastair Cook failed in his bid to record a big hundred at Lord's today as West Indies' attack found their rhythm to bounce back in the first Test.

Resuming the second day on a promising 200 for three, England were looking to press on with opener Alastair Cook attempting to turn his unbeaten 102 into a big total.

But Cook added only three runs while Paul Collingwood was given two early reprieves inside the first half hour's play as England struggled to reach 222 for four.

Cook had hoped to build on his opening day century, his fifth in 15 Test appearances, and score a major innings but never looked comfortable during the early stages.

He was kept out of the limelight by batting partner Collingwood, who also needed a major innings to cement his place for the next Test at Headingley with injured captain Michael Vaughan due to return next week.

Collingwood, unbeaten on 21 overnight, began positively and clipped fast bowler Jerome Taylor just behind square to claim the first boundary of day and then forced the same bowler through mid-off for four off the back foot in his next over.

But Collingwood was fortunate not to become Taylor's first victim of the Test when he slashed at the next delivery only for Daren Ganga to miss a regulation catch in the gully.

Having been given that reprieve on 31, he added just one more to his total before he escaped again, this time shouldering arms to a Taylor inswinger, but umpire Asad Rauf gave him the benefit of the doubt and allowed him to escape.

Taylor's frustration quickly turned to joy in his next over, though, when Cook mistimed an attempted cut shot and picked out the safe hands of Dwayne Bravo at point for 105 and give West Indies a deserved early wicket.
