GAA:The Tipperary county board has dismissed out of hand reports that Nicky English has been offered the opportunity to succeed Liam Sheedy as manager of the All-Ireland hurling champions.
It had been claimed the former Tipp player and coach had been told the job was his if he wanted it, but the county board insist the search for Sheedy’s successor is still an ongoing process.
Describing the report as nothing more than “idle speculation” Tipperary PRO Ger Ryan maintained no decision has been reached on who will replace Sheedy as the county's manager. The Portroe clubman stepped down along with his backroom team after three years earlier this month.
Having guided the county to the Liam MacCarthy cup for the first time since 2001, Sheedy felt the pressures being placed on his time were unsustainable.
English was in charge of Tipperary for that win in 2001, and is believed to have been offered the job again in 2007 before Sheedy was appointed. This morning’s reports claimed he was mulling over this ‘latest offer’ and was due to make a decision before the end of the week.
