The cold weather looks set to continue into Sunday night with low temperatures of -2 degrees and widespread frost forecast.
Temperatures reached -5 in some areas on Saturday night and Sunday morning as a yellow (lowest level) low temperature warning was in place.
At 7am Met Eireann recorded -5 degrees at its Mullingar, Co Westmeath weather station, -4 at Moorepark in Cork, -3 at Oak Park in Carlow and -2 at Casement Aerodrome in Dublin.
Daytime temperatures on Sunday will be 5 to 8 degrees and mainly dry in the east. However the widespread frost will return at night as temperatures drop below zero.
Monday will not bring an end to the wintry weather. Met Eireann has issued a yellow level wind warning for all day Monday from 6am to 8pm. It has forecast strong, gusty south to southeast winds reaching speeds of up to 65km per hour and gusts of 100km/hr. The winds will be strongest in coastal areas.
Monday is expected to be a wet and windy day with widespread rain and highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees.
