The National Roads Authority is encouraging motorists to use the Luas park and ride facility at Cheeverstown, Dublin, to avoid "significant delays" at Newlands Cross.
Work began tonight on a project to upgrade one of the State’s busiest traffic interchanges. Motorists can expect delays at Newlands Cross on the N7 for the next three weeks as a new traffic lanes are put in place.
The three existing traffic lanes heading west from the M50/Red Cow Interchange toward Naas have been shifted to the left on to three newly constructed temporary lanes. The three lanes heading east from Naas will be moved within the next two to three weeks.
The lanes are being moved to free up the necessary space to construct the Newlands Cross flyover which will replace the traffic lights and will carry the N7 traffic up and over the R113 Fonthill/Belgard roads.
The upgrade will result in the removal of the last set of traffic lights on the road network between the Border and Cork, Waterford and Limerick. The flyover will end a bottleneck on the national roads system which affects 80,000 motorists a day and will reduce journey times, the authority said.
